Food Security in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Assessing efforts and policy alternatives
Main Article Content
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical importance of addressing the root causes of food insecurity through effective policies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have succeeded in reducing the effects of the pandemic on national food systems, through a package of measures they took before the outbreak of the pandemic and supplemented them with a set of additional measures during the pandemic itself.
Given the existence of a set of future threats to Gulf food security, there is an urgent need to adopt a proactive plan, in which various governmental and nongovernmental parties participate at the national and regional levels, which enhances the ability of the Gulf states to respond effectively to these challenges on the one hand, and enables them to establish more sustainable, flexible and inclusive food systems on the other hand.
