Abstract

Driving under the influence is also known as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and this implies that the driver operates and drives a vehicle and has a blood alcohol content of at least (0.08%). This research aimed to study this case which is related to the influence of abuse and the extent of its relationship with road traffic accidents and their consequences, and to identify the basic strategies and possible programs to address them. This study indicated that the effects of drug and alcohol use differed greatly between persons, but all of them put the driver and other road users at a risk of road traffic accidents. Safe driving requires the ability to focus, make good judgments, and respond quickly to situations. However, it has been shown through various studies that abuse affects these driver skills, which puts him and other road users at risk. The studies which were viewed revealed that the breath test technology has enabled countries around the world to adopt and implement control strategies that work to deter and reduce driving under the influence. Several control strategies have also proven effective with good results. This study concluded that if these strategies are adopted in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries, further progress is likely to be made in reducing driving under the influence.
