The Novel Coronavirus COVID-19: Security Threats and Challenges
Main Article Content
Abstract
Public health emergencies pose a challenge to security, police, and law enforcement agencies, whether the threat is man-made such as biological attacks or naturally occurring such as the outbreak of epidemics. Security strategies vary according to the cause and level of the threat, as well as the potential risk to security forces, police, and law enforcement due to their direct interaction with these situations. Health emergencies require prompt coordination and response with public health officials and public emergency support authorities. The role of security forces, police and law enforcement agencies may include the enforcement of public health orders such as quarantine or travel restrictions, securing areas in which there are epidemics, securing health care facilities, controlling crowds, investigating suspected scenes of bioterrorism, and protecting national stocks of vaccines or other medicines. In cases related to the outbreak of epidemics, such as Coronavirus (COVID-19), security, police and law enforcement officials will have to balance their resources and efforts between these new responsibilities and the daily service requirements pertinent to the security of the society and the safety of its members. The ability of concerned law enforcement agencies to respond effectively to any emergency, whether public health or otherwise, depends to a large extent on the preparation and planning of such agencies with their strategic partners to deal with such emergencies. This paper will assist security, police and law enforcement officials to comprehend the mechanism of the outbreak of infectious diseases and the threat they pose to public health and safety
