Analyzing the Dynamics of Drug Supply and Demand at the International and Regional Levels : Insights From the World Drug Report 2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
The World Drug Report, published annually by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), is recognized as a leading international reference on global drug trends, markets, and policy developments. It provides in-depth analyses of data related to drug production, trafficking, and consumption, serving as an effective guide for international policies addressing both supply and demand. The report supports evidence-based responses and helps countries monitor progress in global drug control and public health objectives. The 2025 edition of the World Drug Report was released in the last week of June.
The report highlights that organized drug trafficking groups continue to adapt, exploit global crises, and target vulnerable populations. Addressing this challenge requires greater investment in prevention and tackling the root causes of the drug trade at every stage of the illicit supply chain. Responses must draw on technology, strengthen cross-border cooperation, provide alternative livelihoods, and implement judicial measures that target key actors driving these networks. Through a comprehensive and coordinated approach, it is possible to dismantle criminal organizations and enhance both global and regional security.
This policy brief has been developed based on a descriptive analysis employing quantitative methods to review the key findings presented in this year’s report.
