Abstract

Tik Tok has become a popular app worldwide, the app has sparked considerable controversy around the world over the security challenges and social risks it is believed to pose, which led several countries to take action to ban it or partially restrict it.

The paper analyzes the forms of global controversy over the app and refutes the challenges and risks associated with it. It reveals that much of the global controversy and conflict around the Chinese-owned app is a form of cold war between several countries and the country of origin. Moreover, the paper expounds that the overall security challenges and social risks associated with the app are neither new nor limited to it.

The paper recommends that regulation and partial control policies on Tik Tok are an appropriate approach to address the security challenges and social risks, as well as being more efficient than banning policies. In addition, this long-term approach is underpinned by important and effective rules to address all concerns regarding social media platforms.
