Maritime Security Challenges in the Middle East

This paper addresses maritime security challenges in the Middle East. It begins by defining the concept of maritime security and reviewing its various dimensions, then discusses the characteristics of the security environment in the region’s maritime areas, where geopolitical and security dimensions overlap and regional conflicts and border disputes are escalating. The paper also focuses on the most prominent traditional and non-traditional maritime threats, including international and regional competition in the region, growing cyber threats, and the impact of climate change on maritime security.
Finally, the paper offers a number of recommendations to ensure maritime security stability in the Middle East, including: strengthening maritime capabilities through investment in the development of naval weapon systems, adopting a proactive and comprehensive approach to maritime cybersecurity, and developing ports and coastal infrastructure to make them resilient to the challenges associated with climate change.
